How to do a overhead press
Set the bar in the rack at about collarbone height and grip it just outside your shoulders.
Lift it out of the rack so it rests on the front of your shoulders, elbows slightly in front of the bar.
Stand with your feet about hip-width apart, squeeze your glutes and brace your midsection.
Press the bar straight up, moving your head back slightly so the bar clears your chin.
Once the bar passes your forehead, bring your head forward and lock your arms out with the bar over the middle of your feet.
Lower it under control back to the front of your shoulders.
These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.
Common overhead press mistakes
Leaning far back
Squeeze your glutes and brace, so your ribs stay down and your torso stays upright.
Pressing the bar around your face
Move your head out of the way instead, so the bar travels in a straight line.
Finishing with the bar in front of you
Lock out with the bar over your mid-foot and your head through your arms.
Dipping your knees to drive the bar
That makes it a push press. Log it as a separate exercise, so each chart compares like with like.
How to track your overhead press
Log the weight and reps of every set. Over a few weeks, the heaviest weight you lift and your estimated one-rep max show whether you are getting stronger, even when your sets use different rep counts.
Estimated 1RM, Epley formula
50 kg × (1 + 8 ÷ 30) ≈ 63 kg
A set of 8 at 50 kg estimates a one-rep max of about 63 kg.
