Farmer's carry: muscles worked and how to do it

The farmer's carry, or farmer's walk, picks up a heavy dumbbell or kettlebell in each hand and walks with them, standing tall. GymTribe's library lists it as Heavy Farmer Carry, a timed exercise, with the forearms as its target muscle.

How to do a farmer's carry

  1. Stand between two dumbbells or kettlebells.

  2. Hinge at your hips and bend your knees to grip the handles in the middle, with a flat back.

  3. Stand up tall, shoulders back and down, arms straight at your sides.

  4. Walk forward with short, steady steps, keeping your torso upright and the weights still.

  5. When the timer ends, stop, then lower the weights to the floor the same way you lifted them.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common farmer's carry mistakes

  • Leaning to one side

Use the same weight in each hand and stand tall.

  • Shoulders rounding forward

Pull them back and down and keep your chest up.

  • Long, fast strides

Short steps keep the weights from swinging.

  • Dropping the weights

Lower them under control with a flat back, like a deadlift.

How to time your farmer's carry

Hold the position for as long as your form stays clean, and end the set when it slips.

Farmer's carry questions

What muscles does the farmer's carry work?

Your grip and forearms hold the weights, your traps and upper back keep your shoulders up, and your abs and glutes keep you upright as you walk. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of Heavy Farmer Carry counts toward the forearms.

How heavy should a farmer's carry be?

Heavy enough that your grip is the challenge by the end of the walk, while you can still stand tall and walk steadily.

What if I don't have room to walk?

Walk short laps, turning carefully, or stand still and hold the weights for the same time.

How do I track my farmer's carry in GymTribe?

Add Heavy Farmer Carry to a workout and GymTribe runs each set as a 30-second hold, with a countdown on screen.
