Plank: muscles worked and how to do it

The plank holds your body still in a straight line, propped on your forearms and toes, so your core works to stop your hips sagging. GymTribe's library lists it as Forearm Plank, a timed hold, with the deep core as its target muscle.

How to do a plank

  1. Lie face down, then prop yourself on your forearms with your elbows under your shoulders.

  2. Step your feet back so you are on your toes, feet about hip-width apart.

  3. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from your head to your heels.

  4. Brace your midsection as if about to be poked in the stomach, and squeeze your glutes.

  5. Breathe steadily and hold the position until the timer ends.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common plank mistakes

  • Hips sagging

Squeeze your glutes and brace harder. If they still drop, end the set; a shorter clean hold beats a long sagging one.

  • Hips piked up

Lower them until your shoulders, hips and heels line up.

  • Holding your breath

Keep breathing in and out through the whole hold.

  • Looking up

Keep your neck in line with your back, eyes on the floor.

How to time your plank

Hold the position for as long as your form stays clean, and end the set when it slips.

Plank questions

What muscles does the plank work?

The deep core muscles that hold your trunk still, with your abs, obliques, shoulders and glutes all working to keep you straight. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of Forearm Plank counts toward the deep core.

How long should I hold a plank?

GymTribe starts it at 30 seconds a set. Hold only as long as your body stays in a straight line; when your form slips, the set is done.

How do I make the plank harder?

Squeeze harder, move your elbows a little further forward, or lift one foot. GymTribe also lists High Plank, Side Plank and Plank Shoulder Tap as their own exercises.

How do I track my plank in GymTribe?

Add Forearm Plank to a workout and GymTribe runs each set as a 30-second hold, with a countdown on screen.
