Russian twist: muscles worked and how to do it

The Russian twist sits leaning back with your knees bent and turns your torso from side to side, touching your hands or a weight to the floor beside your hips. GymTribe's library lists it as Russian Twist, with the obliques as its target muscle.

How to do a Russian twist

  1. Sit on the floor with your knees bent and your heels on the floor.

  2. Lean back until your torso is at about 45 degrees, keeping your back straight and your chest up.

  3. Clasp your hands in front of your chest, or hold a weight.

  4. Turn your shoulders to one side, bringing your hands toward the floor beside your hip.

  5. Turn through the middle to the other side. Each side is one rep, or each pair; count it the same way every time.

  6. Lift your feet off the floor once you can keep your back straight with them down.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common Russian twist mistakes

  • Moving only your arms

Turn your shoulders and ribs, not just your hands.

  • Rounding your back

Sit taller and lean back a little less.

  • Going too fast

Slow and controlled works the obliques; fast swings let momentum do it.

  • Counting reps differently each time

Pick one-side or both-sides as a rep, and stick with it.

How to track your Russian twist

Log the reps of every set. Over a few weeks, your most reps in one set and in one session show whether you are getting stronger. When you add weight, log it with the reps.

What GymTribe charts for Russian Twist

  • Most reps in one set
  • Max session reps across a workout
  • Heaviest weight once you add load

Russian twist questions

What muscles do Russian twists work?

Mostly the obliques, the muscles at the sides of your waist, with the abs holding you in the leaned-back position. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of Russian Twist counts toward the obliques.

Should my feet be on the floor or up?

Start with your heels down. Lifting your feet makes it harder to balance. Change one thing at a time, so your logged reps stay comparable.

Can I add weight?

Yes, hold a plate, dumbbell or medicine ball at your chest. Log the weight with your reps.

How do I track my Russian twist in GymTribe?

Log each set's reps under Russian Twist. Every session adds a point to its charts, including most reps in one set and max reps in a session, and a New PR alert appears when a set beats your rep record. If you add weight, log it too, and the heaviest weight and estimated 1RM charts fill in.
