Rajma calories and protein: with rice, with roti and on its own.
Rajma chawal is a staple, and the number you log depends mostly on how much rice is next to the beans. Here are the numbers for GymTribe's rajma with rice, the beans on their own, and what happens when the side changes.

01 / One serving
How many calories and how much protein are in rajma?
GymTribe's rajma with rice makes two servings from 250 g of cooked kidney beans, 150 g of dry basmati rice, one onion, 150 g of tomato puree and a tablespoon of oil. One 455 g serving is 540 calories, 18 g of protein, 100 g of carbs, 8 g of fat and 12 g of fiber, or about 119 calories and 4 g of protein per 100 g.
The rice is about half of it. 75 g of dry basmati per serving is about 270 calories and 5 g of protein, and 125 g of cooked kidney beans is about 159 calories and 11 g of protein. The rest is the onion, tomato and oil.
Cooked kidney beans come to about 127 calories and 9 g of protein per 100 g. A 150 g katori of plain cooked rajma beans is about 190 calories and 13 g of protein, before the masala and oil.
02 / The side
Rajma with different sides, one serving each.
| Calories | Protein | Carbs | Fat | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rajma with rice (the recipe) | 540 | 18 g | 100 g | 8 g |
| Rajma with half the rice | 405 | 15 g | 70 g | 8 g |
| Rajma with two rotis instead | 440 | 19 g | 77 g | 9 g |
| The beans alone, 125 g cooked | 159 | 11 g | 28 g | 1 g |
The rotis are 50 g of whole-wheat flour, about two small rotis. The last row is plain cooked beans without the masala or oil, so a real bowl of rajma sits a little above it.
03 / Rajma or chole
Kidney beans have fewer calories than chickpeas.
Cooked kidney beans are about 127 calories and 9 g of protein per 100 g. Cooked chickpeas are about 164 calories and 9 g of protein. Same protein, but chickpeas carry about 30% more calories because they hold more carbs and fat.
That is part of why chole with roti is 470 calories, close to rajma with rice at 540, even though the rotis are lighter than the rice. For the whole family of dal and bean dishes, see dal calories and protein.
04 / Logging it
How to log your own rajma.
Find rajma with rice in the GymTribe food catalog and set the amount you ate. If you eat your rajma with a different amount of rice, or with roti, weigh the rice or count the rotis and log them as separate foods. For a plate you did not cook, photograph it with the AI calorie counter and check the portion before saving.
Keep it simple
Weigh the rice once.
How much rice goes on the plate decides most of the number, and it is the easiest part to measure. These numbers come from GymTribe's recipes; they are estimates, not medical or clinical nutrition advice.
