Pec deck fly: muscles worked and how to do it

The pec deck is a seated machine fly: you bring two handles or pads together in front of your chest in a wide arc, with your elbows slightly bent. GymTribe's library lists it as Pec Deck Fly, with the mid chest as its target muscle.

How to do a pec deck fly

  1. Set the seat so the handles are at about chest height when you sit with your back against the pad.

  2. Hold the handles with a slight bend in your elbows and your chest up.

  3. Bring the handles together in front of your chest in a wide arc, squeezing your chest.

  4. Pause for a moment with the handles close together.

  5. Let them open under control until you feel a stretch across your chest, without your shoulders rolling forward.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common pec deck fly mistakes

  • Seat too high or too low

Set it so your hands are level with your chest. Too high and your shoulders take over.

  • Bending and straightening your elbows

Keep the same slight bend through every rep, so it stays a fly, not a press.

  • Opening too far

Stop where you feel a good stretch with your shoulders still back.

  • Back leaving the pad

Keep your back and head against the pad the whole time.

How to track your pec deck fly

Log the weight and reps of every set. Over a few weeks, the heaviest weight you lift and your estimated one-rep max show whether you are getting stronger, even when your sets use different rep counts.

Estimated 1RM, Epley formula

50 kg × (1 + 12 ÷ 30) ≈ 70 kg

A set of 12 at 50 kg estimates a one-rep max of about 70 kg.

Pec deck fly questions

What muscles does the pec deck work?

The chest, with some help from the front delts. Because your elbows stay at a fixed bend, the triceps do very little. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of Pec Deck Fly counts toward the mid chest.

Pec deck or cable fly?

Both are fly movements. The pec deck guides the path and keeps you seated; cables let you change the angle, low to high or high to low. GymTribe lists the cable flies as their own exercises, aimed at the upper, mid or lower chest.

How many reps for the pec deck?

It is usually trained for moderate to higher reps, often 10 to 15, after the heavier presses. Follow your program and log each set.

How do I estimate my pec deck fly one-rep max?

Use the Epley formula, weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). A set of 12 at 50 kg estimates about 70 kg. The 1RM calculator on this site does the sum for any set.

How do I track my pec deck fly in GymTribe?

Log each set's weight and reps under Pec Deck Fly. Every session adds a point to its charts: heaviest weight and estimated 1RM, best set volume and most reps, and best session volume and max session reps. A New PR alert appears when a set beats your heaviest weight, estimated 1RM or rep record.
