Standing calf raise: muscles worked and how to do it

The standing calf raise lifts your heels by pushing up onto the balls of your feet, through a full range off the edge of a step or on a calf machine. GymTribe's library lists it as Standing Calf Raise, with the calves as its target muscle.

How to do a calf raise

  1. Stand on the edge of a step with the balls of your feet on it and your heels hanging off. Hold a rail or wall for balance.

  2. Keep your legs straight but not locked.

  3. Lower your heels below the step until you feel a stretch in your calves.

  4. Push up onto the balls of your feet as high as you can and pause for a moment at the top.

  5. Lower slowly back to the stretch and repeat.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common calf raise mistakes

  • Bouncing

Pause at the bottom for a second. Bouncing lets your tendons do the work instead of your calves.

  • Half reps

Go from a full stretch to as high as you can rise, every rep.

  • Rolling out onto your little toes

Push up through your big toe and the ball of your foot.

  • Bending your knees to help

Keep your legs straight. Bent knees turn it into a different exercise.

How to track your calf raise

Log the reps of every set. Over a few weeks, your most reps in one set and in one session show whether you are getting stronger. When you add weight, log it with the reps.

What GymTribe charts for Standing Calf Raise

Standing calf raise questions

What muscles does the standing calf raise work?

The calves. With straight legs, the large gastrocnemius at the top of the calf does a big share, with the soleus underneath. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of Standing Calf Raise counts toward the calves.

Standing or seated calf raise?

With your knees bent in a seated calf raise, the soleus does more of the work. GymTribe lists Seated Calf Raise and Smith Machine Calf Raise as their own exercises, all counted toward the calves.

How do I make calf raises harder?

Hold a dumbbell in one hand, do them one leg at a time, slow the lowering down or pause longer at the top. If you add weight, log it with the reps.

How do I track my calf raise in GymTribe?

Log each set's reps under Standing Calf Raise. Every session adds a point to its charts, including most reps in one set and max reps in a session, and a New PR alert appears when a set beats your rep record. If you add weight, log it too, and the heaviest weight and estimated 1RM charts fill in.
