Leg extension: muscles worked and how to do it

The leg extension is a machine exercise that straightens your knees against a pad on your shins, so the quads do all the work. GymTribe's library lists it as Seated Leg Extension, with the quads as its target muscle.

How to do a leg extension

  1. Adjust the back pad so your knees line up with the machine's pivot point when you sit back.

  2. Set the shin pad so it rests just above your ankles.

  3. Sit back, hold the handles and keep your hips down on the seat.

  4. Straighten your knees to lift the pad until your legs are straight, then squeeze your quads for a moment.

  5. Lower under control until your knees are bent to about 90 degrees, or a little further.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common leg extension mistakes

  • Kicking the weight up

Lift smoothly and pause at the top. If you need to swing, the weight is too heavy.

  • Hips lifting off the seat

Hold the handles and keep your hips down.

  • Knees not lined up with the pivot

Adjust the back pad until they are. It makes the movement smoother.

  • Letting the stack slam

Lower slowly, and stop just before the plates touch.

How to track your leg extension

Log the weight and reps of every set. Over a few weeks, the heaviest weight you lift and your estimated one-rep max show whether you are getting stronger, even when your sets use different rep counts.

Estimated 1RM, Epley formula

50 kg × (1 + 12 ÷ 30) ≈ 70 kg

A set of 12 at 50 kg estimates a one-rep max of about 70 kg.

Leg extension questions

What muscles does the leg extension work?

The quads, on their own. Nothing else has to help, which is why people use it to finish off the quads after squats or presses. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of Seated Leg Extension counts toward the quads.

How many reps should I do on leg extensions?

It is usually trained for moderate to higher reps, around 10 to 15, with a controlled lowering. Use whatever your program says and log every set.

Can I compare leg extension weight between gyms?

Not reliably. Machines differ in their levers and stacks. Track it on the same machine when you can.

How do I estimate my leg extension one-rep max?

Use the Epley formula, weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). A set of 12 at 50 kg estimates about 70 kg. The 1RM calculator on this site does the sum for any set.

How do I track my leg extension in GymTribe?

Log each set's weight and reps under Seated Leg Extension. Every session adds a point to its charts: heaviest weight and estimated 1RM, best set volume and most reps, and best session volume and max session reps. A New PR alert appears when a set beats your heaviest weight, estimated 1RM or rep record.
