T-bar row: muscles worked and how to do it

The T-bar row pulls one end of a barbell, anchored at the other end, up to your chest while you lean forward. Most gyms use a landmine or T-bar station with a close handle. GymTribe's library lists it as T-bar Row, with the upper back as its target muscle.

How to do a T-bar row

  1. Straddle the bar facing the weighted end, feet about shoulder-width apart.

  2. Hinge at your hips with your knees slightly bent and grip the handle with both hands.

  3. Lift the bar off the floor so your arms are straight and your back is flat, leaning well forward.

  4. Row the handle toward your chest, driving your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades together.

  5. Lower it under control until your arms are straight, keeping the same torso angle.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common T-bar row mistakes

  • Standing more upright each rep

Hold the same lean throughout, so your back does the work.

  • Using your hips to heave it up

Lighten the load until you can row it without a hip thrust.

  • Rounding your back

Keep your chest up and back flat.

  • Logging weight differently

Count the plates only, or the plates plus the bar, but always the same way.

How to track your T-bar row

Log the weight and reps of every set. Over a few weeks, the heaviest weight you lift and your estimated one-rep max show whether you are getting stronger, even when your sets use different rep counts.

Estimated 1RM, Epley formula

50 kg × (1 + 10 ÷ 30) ≈ 67 kg

A set of 10 at 50 kg estimates a one-rep max of about 67 kg.

T-bar row questions

What muscles does the T-bar row work?

Mostly the upper back, with the lats, rear delts and biceps, while your lower back holds the bent-over position. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of T-bar Row counts toward the upper back.

T-bar row or barbell row?

Both are bent-over rows. The anchored bar moves in an arc and the close handle keeps your hands together, which many people find steadier. GymTribe tracks them separately, and lists Chest-Supported T-bar Row as well.

How do I count the weight on a T-bar row?

Gyms differ, so pick one way, plates only or plates plus bar, and use it every time. What matters for your charts is that sessions compare.

How do I estimate my T-bar row one-rep max?

Use the Epley formula, weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). A set of 10 at 50 kg estimates about 67 kg. The 1RM calculator on this site does the sum for any set.

How do I track my T-bar row in GymTribe?

Log each set's weight and reps under T-bar Row. Every session adds a point to its charts: heaviest weight and estimated 1RM, best set volume and most reps, and best session volume and max session reps. A New PR alert appears when a set beats your heaviest weight, estimated 1RM or rep record.
