Pull-up: muscles worked and how to do it

The pull-up hangs from a bar with an overhand grip and pulls your body up until your chin is over it. GymTribe's library lists it as Pull-Up, with the lats as its target muscle.

How to do a pull-up

  1. Grip the bar overhand, a little wider than your shoulders, and hang with your arms straight.

  2. Pull your shoulders down away from your ears and brace your midsection, legs straight or ankles crossed.

  3. Pull yourself up by driving your elbows down toward your ribs.

  4. Keep going until your chin is over the bar.

  5. Lower yourself under control until your arms are straight again.

These steps describe common technique. If something hurts, stop and ask a qualified coach or clinician.

Common pull-up mistakes

  • Kicking or swinging

Keep your legs still and your body tight. Swinging reps are a different exercise.

  • Stopping short of the bar

Count a rep when your chin clears the bar, and not before.

  • Not straightening at the bottom

Return to a full hang between reps, so every rep is the same length.

  • Shrugging up to the bar

Start each rep by pulling your shoulders down.

How to track your pull-up

Log the reps of every set. Over a few weeks, your most reps in one set and in one session show whether you are getting stronger. When you add weight, log it with the reps.

Pull-up questions

What muscles do pull-ups work?

Mostly the lats, with the biceps, upper back, rear delts and forearms, as your grip holds your body weight. In GymTribe's muscle map, each set of Pull-Up counts toward the lats.

How do I build up to my first pull-up?

Common routes are lat pulldowns, band-assisted or machine-assisted pull-ups, and slow lowerings from the top of the bar. GymTribe lists Assisted Pull-Up as its own exercise, so you can track it on the way.

What is the difference between a pull-up and a chin-up?

A pull-up uses an overhand grip; a chin-up uses an underhand grip, which brings in more biceps. GymTribe lists the chin-up as Underhand Chin-Up and counts both toward the lats.

How do I track my pull-up in GymTribe?

Log each set's reps under Pull-Up. Every session adds a point to its charts, including most reps in one set and max reps in a session, and a New PR alert appears when a set beats your rep record. If you add weight, log it too, and the heaviest weight and estimated 1RM charts fill in.
